Pope Francis will pay an apostolic visit to Hungary between 28 and 30 April 2023. The highlight of the journey will be the Holy Mass on Kossuth Square in Budapest, which will be celebrated by the Holy Father on Sunday, 30 April. The liturgy will be performed by the Bishop of Rome – and the clergy celebrating the Mass with him – in special vestments designed and made for the occasion. The liturgical garments, producted by Desta Industrie S.r.l., were designed by painter Orsolya Fecske, member of the Sisters of Social Service, at the request of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
The vestments are characterized by white and gold colours, which mark the Easter period according to Catholic tradition and liturgical rules. The garments include the vestments, the stole, the bishop’s mitre, the cope and the dalmatic for the deacons.
The graphic is based on the event’s motto: “Christ is our future”. The main decoration of the vestment is a drawing of the resurrected Christ, appearing as a white light contour against a golden background. Two streams flow from his heart (symbols of blood and water), widening to a river. The image of the river is a reference to the Danube, one of the country’s main symbols, and is also linked to the symbols of the International Eucharistic Congress held in our country a year and a half ago. The blue of the river matches the sky above the head of the resurrected Christ. The colour blue is a bridge between earth and heaven, reminding us to the Virgin Mary as well.
