18 July Endre Havas, bishop of Csanád, is appointedApostolic administrator in the diocese of Esztergom by the Holy See.
1 August First meeting of the Priests' Peace Movement. RichardHorváth states its aims.
30 August The concordat betweenChurch and state is signed by József Darvas, Minister ofReligion and Education, and József Grósz,Archbishop of Kalocsa.
1 September The bishops' conference establishes the Roman CatholicTheological Academy, after the separation of the theological facultyfrom the university.
6 September Miklós Dudás, bishop ofHajdúdorog founds the Greek Catholic Seminary.
7 September Decree banning all religious orders (1950: statute 34),excepting four Religious orders, retained to run the eight remainingChurch grammar schools. The Benedictines, Franciscans, Piarists and thePoor School Sisters are each allowed to keep two schools and 405religious.
7 October- 5 December All religious houses not yet taken by the state have tobe evacuated and given to the authorities.
